The refurbishing of a lavish, 23 room 20,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style villa built in 1913, to be used as a training center for a major corporation, called for a sensitive evaluation of goals and possibilities. The 217-acre estate had been acquired as a calm retreat from the stress and distractions of high technology business. Thus, upgrading the structure with minimal impact on its unique ambiance was of primary importance.

By moving and consolidating obsolete service areas, additional meeting and office space was created in convenient locations. Food service for 60 was made more efficient, as was energy consumption and security. New life safety and handicapped access requirements were integrated into the design. Interior finishes were selected for increased durability and simplified maintenance, without any sacrifice of materials and craftsmanship.
